WELCOME
Council for Social Development – Hyderabad provides a positive
and enabling environment for innovative research and writing
in the social sciences and law. CSD - Hyderabad, as part of
its mission, provides a platform for scholars and
intellectuals from diverse backgrounds and different
disciplines to share their work, learning and ideas in an
environment that is vibrant, receptive and stimulating. It
encourages new research initiatives by its faculty and
provides an inspirational setting for work that is focused
on the many dimensions of social justice and social
development. As part of its effort to create new platforms
for learning and debate, CSD offers internships to
undergraduate and graduate students from different
disciplines, as well as fellowships and opportunities for
collaboration between community based activists and
faculty.
CSD Hyderabad looks ahead with the aim of creating an inclusive
and critical space for research, writing, teaching and
policy interventions – especially important in the current
climate of globalization and its complex impacts.
MISSION
The primary mission
of CSD Hyderabad is to provide research scholars with a
space for innovative research and writing that
simultaneously addresses critical needs of pluralism,
democracy, diversity and social justice in the context of
development and globalization. In focusing on the social
sciences and law, CSD aims to provide a context for the
exploration of the intellectual histories of different
disciplines and interdisciplinary areas that draws on the
rich history of critical engagements, resistance, anti
colonial struggles, and philosophies of justice in the global
south, especially in the Indian sub-continent.
HISTORY
The Council for
Social Development (CSD) was founded by Dr. Durgabai
Deshmukh and Dr. CD Deshmukh in Delhi in 1962. The Southern
Regional Centre, CSD, Hyderabad, was established in
Hyderabad in 1967. CSD was set up as a think tank to keep a
focus on the social aspects of development planning and to
initiate policy oriented research on the social determinants
of development – vital concerns in the early plan periods.
Dr. DurgabaiDeshmukh, legendary social worker and
indefatigable institution builder, gathered around her the
best minds to think through human social needs during the
frenzied years of nation building. It is this concern for
social justice and equity that continues to guide the work
of CSD Hyderabad.
The current President of CSD is the distinguished former
diplomat Prof. Muchkund Dubey and the Chairman of the
Managing Committee of CSD Hyderabad is distinguished
scientist, Dr. Pushpa Mittra Bhargava.
